An innocent husband and father was killed in a head-on collision with a stolen car north of Brisbane last night. Shahid Islam had been out preparing his family’s new house and was headed home to his wife and four-year-old son when he was hit by an allegedly speeding joy-rider travelling on the wrong side of the road.

Police said they spotted the stolen Mitsubishi 4WD in Lutwyche about midnight and attempted to pull it over before the driver sped off. Further north at Kitchener Road in Kedron, 9News understands the driver moved onto the wrong side of the road, driving directly at officers and narrowly missing them and another car. While in the wrong lane, the car narrowly missed an ambulance, before hitting Mr Islam’s car head-on on Gympie Arterial Road at Bald Hills.

Twenty paramedics were called to the scene, but Mr Islam had been killed instantly. Family friend Maxi Haque told 9News he was upset, frustrated and angry. “He’s always laughing, smiling, he’s a happy guy,” Mr Haque said. “We need to deal with these people more strictly. They need to be punished.”

Also killed on impact was 32-year-old John Weatherall, who was in the passenger seat of the stolen car. Travelling in the backseat, 32-year-old Chantelle Lucas was critically injured. The alleged driver, 28-year-old Jordan Cubby, was also taken to hospital.

Police said as rescue crews tried to help him, Cubby kicked his way out hurling abuse and spat blood in the face of a female officer who must now undergo six months of disease testing. The 4WD was allegedly stolen from a Toowoomba home on Monday.

The owner told 9News he is devastated to know his car was involved in such an horrific accident.
Cubby remains under police guard and is likely to face a string of serious charges.
